“Comprehension by others is the least important aspect.” – Genesis Breyer P-Orridge. Change Itself.
Swedish polymath Carl Abrahamsson (listen to our chat here) has recently released a documentary on the legendary Genesis Breyer P-Orridge, called Change Itself.
Watch the trailer below.
Change Itself – An Art Apart: Genesis Breyer P-Orridge from Carl Abrahamsson on Vimeo.
Carl and Gen have known each other for decades and that intimacy or comfort shows. Having watched a goodly number of P-Orridge documentaries and interviews, Change Itself gets some of the most candid or detailed responses to questions and topic areas I actually want answered. (You should also probably watch The Ballard of Genesis and Lady Jaye.)
For instance, Change Itself has Gen’s best description of the long term benefits they derive from using the Burroughs/Gysin cut-up method over the long term. For me it’s only ever been useful or resonant as a beginning activity -but then it is kissing cousins with sigilisation and that’s certainly something I’ve stuck with over the long term.
Speaking of sigils, here’s a quote from the film, where Gen is speaking about the experience of returning to the art world in earnest by exhibiting their collages -and which things are popular versus which things sell:
“The sigils are the ones that don’t sell…. They don’t know the language. It’s an alien language… They can follow us to the point of political satire -collages of the Queen and so on- but when it gets to direct magic they shut off. It’s interesting.”
Rent it. Buy it. But definitely watch it. Available via the vimeo link above.
Nicely timed for Bight of the Twin -which you London folk should have on your radar for this month.
